Congratulations to all finishers and thanks again for your continued support.
Warm and dry conditions greeted the runners and helpers for the 37th Stretton Skyline Fell Race, a tough 19 mile challenge taking in 5 summits surrounding the Church Stretton area, with 92 runners all finishing under 5 hours.
23 year old Daniel Connolly, from Bridgnorth, comfortably retained his title winning the men’s race in 2.25.12, the 5th fastest time ever on the course, 10 minutes quicker than he ran last year and the fastest winning time since 2008. Daniel won despite winning the Ellerdine 5k flat and fast road race on Wednesday. Jack Wood made a fine debut in the Skyline travelling from Ilkley in Yorkshire finishing 2nd in 2.33.42 the 38th fastest time, with double race winner from 2003 and 2004 Pete Vale making a welcome return to place 3rd.
22 year old Josie Lloyd made it a double individual victory for Mercia runners as in her race debut she came home first woman in 3.09.52, the 25th fastest time on the course, just under 4 minutes ahead of Carnethy Hill Runner Rachel Normand from Edinburgh, whose 3.13.45 puts her 36th on the all time rankings, whilst Mercia’s Eloise Lee took 3rd place in 3.27.47. Libby Collinson, from Much Wenlock, continued her remarkable record in the race, as she finished fourth overall as an over 60 in 3.39.04, 4 minutes quicker than her 3rd place last year.
Race records of 2.46.42 by Ruth Pickvance in 2005 and Ken West of 2.17.16 in 1986 survived another year.
Special thanks to all our helpers, without whom the race would not have been possible, Dick Langford on registration, Stretton drinks and finish, John Mason, (Pole Bank), Lin and Dave Jackson. (Little Stretton drinks), John Murray (2 x A49 road crossings), Dave Hopkins (Ragleth), Adam Cawley and family (Caradoc), John and Peggy Bradley, (Comley drinks), John Fry (Lawley) and Steve Greenhalgh (Motts Road), John Fry, Dave Jackson, John Murray and Dave Hopkins for help marking out and collecting the course. Malcom Dawes for help at the finish. Margaret Cooper for organising the goody bags, Church Stretton Town Council for the use of the sports pavilion, local farmers and the National Trust.
Thanks to all the runners, who showed their appreciation to the marshals, especially those on the summit positions.
If anyone can’t run next year we always appreciate offers of help to marshal.
See you all again next year, on Sunday 6th September 2020 for the 38th Stretton Skyline- Paul Sanderson, Telford AC.
